Goree Island off the south coast of Dakar had been serving as a slave trade outpost from the middle 15th century up to the abolition of slavery. Uncountable generations of Africans got a last glimpse of their mother continent whilst setting off for their precarious journey across the ocean to the Americas and their doom to a new miserable life of forced labour.
